International Arbitration & Dispute Resolution
Maya’s practice focuses on international arbitration and dispute resolution, including the representation of sovereign states and investors before international tribunals such as the World Bank’s International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA), and the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC).
Current active matters include the representation of a Canadian investor in a tax dispute brought against Mexico under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), Chinese investors against the Kingdom of Cambodia under the China-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement, Israeli investors against a Southern African State, and a Southeast Asian State in an ICC infrastructure dispute.
Export Controls & Economic Sanctions
Maya advises both US and non-US clients on how to comply with and understand US laws and regulations related to the export and re-exports of goods, software, services, and technology. In particular, Maya advises clients on the complexities of the Export Administration Regulations (EAR), International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), and Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctions and embargoes. Maya’s practice thus far has focused on assisting clients file advisory opinion requests before the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS), license requests before OFAC, and responding to subpoenas issued by various government agencies.
